Memorial Day whites filled the church today. Driving home, the heart of our little village's downtown was lined with flags, all ready for Memorial Day. It's Bunting Season in Maine, and it's beautiful. Flags and bunting will drape houses, and flags will be hoisted in the streets for Flag Day in June, the Fourth, and one last time again for Labor Day in September. I love the unabashed patriotism of Mainers.
To celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi, the Bambino and I made card stock monstrances from themassexplained.com. It afforded me the chance to further explain "the bread thing that Mommy and Daddy eat," as it's called by our small child. He desperately wants to take Communion, and is horribly affronted that he is not yet old enough to receive Jesus in the Host.
Patience is a virtue, I tell him (and myself for the millionth time). I explain, "You have to be as old as your friend's bigger brother, who is making his first Holy Communion on Father's Day." The Bambino cries, wishing he were older and had legs long enough to drive a car or at least a tractor, or maybe a tank. Failing that, can he at least drive one of the broken bicycles in the garage? The crisis has passed...
And now I have to go put up bunting on our front porch. Welcome, Bunting Season!
